Randy Johnson racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts as the Arizona
club defeated the Houston Astros by a score of 2 to 1 at Pacific Bell
Park.

Johnson(1-0) gave Arizona a solid outing.  He didn't give up much, just 5 hits
and 3 walks in 7 innings.  Arizona had only 5 hits for the night.  

Jose Jimenez recorded the save, his 1st.  Ryan Dempster(0-1) was hit with the
loss.  He pitched 6 innings giving up 5 hits and 1 walk.

OPEN was asked about the performance of Johnson, 'He had his good stuff out
there tonight.  The fans really get into it when the strikeouts start
mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'

Pacific Bell Park.

In the top of the 5th inning Houston went on top for good scoring 2 runners on
2 hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Lance Berkman who silenced the
crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 1st of the season).  Houston had
many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.

The victory was credited to Kevin Appier(1-0) who went 7 innings, allowing 4
runs. The losing pitcher was Curt Schilling(0-1).  He was touched for 4
homeruns in his 7 innings of work.

Center fielder Steve Finley ripped 2 homeruns and scored 3 times as the

at Busch Stadium.

The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings.  Arizona came out the victor in
the 12th inning.  Finley ripped a solo home run (his 2nd of the season).
Arizona out-hit Houston for the game, 14 hits to 10.

allowing no runs. Karsay got relief help from Bob Wickman who gained credit

Third baseman Dean Palmer rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Arizona

Palmer had a big day at the plate.  He lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run in the 3rd inning and ripped a solo home run (his 3rd of the
