Left fielder Greg Vaughn had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals
defeated the Anaheim Angels in 11 innings by the score of 10 to 9 at Bank One
Ballpark.

The game was deadlocked at 9 after nine full innings.  St. Louis won the hard
fought contest in the 11th inning.  Jim Edmonds doubled.  J.D. Drew followed
and he was walked intentionally.  Vaughn then doubled giving St. Louis the
win much to the delight of the home town crowd.  St. Louis rapped out 17 hits
for the night.  

Troy Percival(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Curtis
Leskanic(0-1) was the loser in relief.  He was knocked around pretty good,
giving up 3 runs in 2 innings

Mark McGwire smacked a grand slam as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the
Anaheim Angels by a score of 6 to 3 at Bank One Ballpark.

McGwire helped send the fans home happy.  He cleared the bases with a Grand
Slam homerun (his 1st of the season) in the 5th inning and doubled in the 7th
inning.  Anaheim was out-hit by St. Louis, 12 hits to 9.  

The win went to Darryl Kile(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 6 innings. Kile got
relief help from Troy Percival who gained credit for his 1st save.  Tanyon
Sturtze(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He was knocked around by St. Louis,
allowing 7 hits and 4 walks in 4 innings.

walk.  Melvin Mora then laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Brent Mayne stepped in
and he was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Mark McGwire stepped into
the box and hit a sacrifice fly scoring the run.  St. Louis managed 9 in
their victory.  

The victory was credited to Rudy Seanez(1-0) who went 3 innings, allowing no
