Designated hitter Phil Nevin slammed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Jason
Schmidt pitched a complete game at SAFECO Field as the Oakland A's beat the
Houston Astros 6 to 1.

It seemed that Houston pitching was serving up softballs for Nevin to hit. He
lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 1st inning, smashed a two-run homer (his
2nd of the season) in the 3rd inning and lined a single in the 8th inning.
Oakland had a total of 9 hits for the game.

Schmidt(1-0) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Kevin
Appier(0-1) suffered the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 8 innings.

'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Nevin said 'next
time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'
