Sammy Sosa slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Pacific Bell Park as the
Arizona ballclub came back dramatically to top the Oakland A's by the score
of 6 to 5.
Arizona came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 9th
inning scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. Luis Gonzalez kicked off the action when
he drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Jose Hernandez stepped in and he
smacked a single. Bill Mueller then lashed a single driving in a run.
Damian Miller came up and he was walked intentionally to load the bases.
Doug Mirabelli came to the plate and drew a walk giving Arizona the win much
to the delight of the home town crowd. Arizona banged out 7 on the night.
The win was credited to Steve Kline(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing
no runs. Buddy Groom(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 hit
and no walks without retiring a batter.
'We just wouldn't give up,' Sosa said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans -
they were with us the whole way.'

Ramon Hernandez cleared three ducks from a very crowded pond with a grand slam
at Pacific Bell Park as the Oakland A's beat the Arizona team by the count of
7 to 5.
Hernandez led the offense for Oakland. He lined a base-hit in the 2nd inning,
delivered a single in the 6th inning and emptied the bases with a Grand Slam
homerun (his 1st of the season) in the 7th inning. Arizona was retired
without difficulty in the bottom of the 9th.
Danny Patterson(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and
allowing no runs. Jason Isringhausen earned his 1st save. Curt
Schilling(1-1) was given the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 7 innings.

Jason Isringhausen closed it out for Oakland and Jeromy Burnitz homered and
had 3 RBI as the Oakland A's topped the Arizona ballclub by a score of 10 to
9 at SAFECO Field.
It was a good day for Oakland thanks to Burnitz. He smacked a three-run homer
(his 7th of the season) in the 1st inning and doubled in the 4th inning.
Isringhausen pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 3rd save.
Dave Weathers(1-0) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Al
Levine(2-1) was charged with the loss in relief. Luis Gonzalez rocketed 2
homeruns and had 4 RBI but his offense was not enough to carry Arizona to
victory.
