Boston Red Sox beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 8 to 7.

the ball over the fence for three runs in the 1st inning and blasted a solo
shot (his 3rd of the season) in the 5th inning. Pittsburgh threatened in the
9th but their rally came up short.

Derek Lowe(2-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Lowe was helped
out by John Smoltz who recorded his 3rd save. Kerry Wood(0-3) was charged
with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 innings of work.

The Boston Red Sox pitching staff gave the fans an evening that they'll never
forget by tossing a combined perfect game! The tension started to build
around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified. Boston
had only 5 hits for the night.

The win went to Pedro Martinez(3-0) who allowed no runs in 7 innings. John
Smoltz earned his 5th save. Barry Zito(1-2) was the loser. He surrendered
just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.

'You probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than this
happening,' said Martinez who got credit for the win, 'I don't expect it to
sink in for awhile.' he said. 'You know, it's hard to say who was better, the
starter or the bullpen!'
