In an great finish the Arizona ballclub won in dramatic fashion over the St.
Louis Cardinals by a score of 5 to 4 at PNC Park.

Arizona had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 3
hits.  A.J. Pierzynski opened up the scoring as he hit a bases-empty home run
(his 1st of the season).  Jerry Hairston Jr followed and he delivered a
single.  Hairston Jr was running on the next pitch and he stole second.  Doug
Mientkiewicz came up and he stroked a single making Arizona victorious to the
delight of the the home town crowd.  Although they lost, St. Louis did
out-hit Arizona 12 to 8.  

Joe Borowski(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Troy Percival(0-1)
was the losing pitcher in relief.  He surrendered 3 hits and no walks without
retiring a batter.

14,649 fans were treated to a fine game at PNC Park as only one run separated
the combatants at game's end.  The Arizona team won by the slimmest of
margins, 2 to 1.

The score was knotted at 1 after nine innings.  Arizona was victorious in the
15th inning.  Magglio Ordonez laced a one-base hit.  A.J. Pierzynski was a
strikeout victim, unable to help out.  Doug Mientkiewicz then laced a
base-knock.  Brook Fordyce followed and he slapped a single making Arizona
the winners and sending the 14,649 fans home happy.  St. Louis was out-hit by
Arizona, 15 hits to 9.  

The win was credited to Joe Borowski(2-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Jake Westbrook(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.

Scot Shields had a strong outing and third baseman Bill Mueller had 2 base
hits at Bank One Ballpark as the Arizona ballclub beat the St. Louis
Cardinals by the count of 3 to 2.

Shields(2-1) was very good in the win.  He allowed just 4 hits and no walks in
7 innings reducing his ERA from 6.00 to 4.26.  Arizona out-hit St. Louis for
the game, 9 hits to 6.  

Matt Mantei recorded his 2nd save.  The loss was charged to Matt Morris(1-1).
He surrendered 3 runs and 8 hits in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Rafael Furcal had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Arizona ballclub outscored the
St. Louis Cardinals 11 to 4.

Arizona tallied 5 runs in the top of the 4th inning when they had 5 base hits.
The highlight belonged to Furcal who quieted the crowd when he tripled
bringing in two baserunners.  Arizona had 15 hits for the night while St.
Louis had 10.  

Brian Lawrence(4-0) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Scott
Sullivan recorded the save, his 1st.  Hideo Nomo(3-1) suffered the loss.  His
ERA ballooned from 3.48 to 4.54 as he allowed 6 runs in 4 innings.
