Pierzynski enjoyed a big day at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'

Johnson was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good zip on my

47,167 fans were treated to a fine game at PNC Park as only one run separated
the combatants at game's end. The St. Louis Cardinals won by the slimmest of
margins, 4 to 3.

St. Louis tallied 2 runs in the 6th inning. The crucial at-bat was provided
by Paul Konerko who helped quiet the crowd when he bombed a two-run dinger
(his 2nd of the season). Arizona had a chance to come back in the 9th but
they came up short.

Dontrelle Willis(1-0) went 6 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Armando
Benitez earned his 1st save. Curt Schilling(0-1) was the losing pitcher. 'I
was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Willis, 'I was just
giving us a chance to win.'
