At Shea Stadium, the Boston fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.  A.J.
Burnett(1-0) finally bested his Boston opposite, Pedro Martinez(0-1), by the
score of 3 to 1.

Boston surrendered all of the runs Florida needed in the 3rd inning when they
tallied 3 runs on 3 hits.  That was all Burnett needed.  Boston threatened in
the 9th but Florida was able to put down the rally.  

Burnett was helped out by Juan Rincon who recorded his 1st save.  Martinez was
the losing pitcher.  He pitched 8 innings allowing 4 hits and 5 walks.

Shortstop Adam Everett had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Shea Stadium where the
Florida Marlins beat the Boston Red Sox in 15 innings by the score of 4 to
2.

The score was tied at 2 after nine.  Florida ended up winning it in the 15th
inning.  Derrek Lee opened up the inning nicely when he slapped a base-hit.
Vladimir Guerrero next to the plate and he doubled.  Victor Martinez then was
walked intentionally to load the bases.  Two outs later Everett stepped up to
the plate and he laced a one-base hit.  Everett took second on the throw.
Juan Rincon got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes.
Overall Florida out-hit Boston 11 to 5.  

The win went to Rincon(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Mike
Macdougal(0-1) was the loser in relief.  He gave up 3 hits and 1 walk in 1
inning.

At Fenway Park the Boston Red Sox outscored the Florida Marlins in 11 innings

The score was tied at 3 after nine.  Finally, Boston pulled the game out in
the 11th inning.  Jason Varitek led off and started the rally when he lashed
a single.  Trot Nixon came to the plate and drew a walk.  Chris Burke then
laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Juan Castro came up and he doubled.  After
another out, Rob Mackowiak stepped up to the plate and he tripled.  Mark
Teixeira dug into the batters box next, but he struck out.  Boston had 8 hits
for the night.  

The winning pitcher was Ron Villone(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Mike
Macdougal gained credit for his 1st save.  Jay Witasick(0-1) was given the
loss in relief.

Catcher Victor Martinez hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Florida Marlins
pulled out a win over the Boston Red Sox by a score of 8 to 7 at Fenway
Park.

The game was won by Florida with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning.  Frank
Catalanotto stroked a base-hit.  Derrek Lee was next and he banged out a
single.  Lee took second on the throw.  Vladimir Guerrero then was walked
intentionally to load the bases.  Martinez stepped in and he lashed a single
giving Florida the win much to the delight of the home town crowd.  For the
game Florida out-hit Boston 15 to 11.  

Juan Rincon(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no
runs. Salomon Torres(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.

Adam Everett was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Luis Castillo then
laced a base-knock giving Florida the win much to the delight of the home
town crowd.  Florida banged out 7 hits on the night.  

Burnett(2-0) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Pedro
Martinez(0-2) took the loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 7 hits in 8 and 1/3
innings.
