Mark Derosa had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates bested the
Minnesota Twins 4 to 1 at Tropicana Field.

Minnesota surrendered all of the runs Pittsburgh needed in the 2nd inning when
they tallied 4 runs on 4 hits.  That early scoring was all that Shaun
Marcum(1-0) needed.  Minnesota was out-hit by Pittsburgh, 9 hits to 4.

Marcum was helped out by Brad Lidge who recorded his 1st save.  Josh
Beckett(0-1) suffered the loss.  He gave up 8 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 1/3
innings.

Hideki Matsui smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Hideki Okajima stopped
Pittsburgh cold as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 9 to 6
at Tropicana Field.

Matsui had a big evening at the plate.  He stroked a one-base hit in the 2nd
inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 6th inning and popped a two-run
clout over the fence in the 7th inning.  Minnesota had 14 hits for the night.

Mike Timlin(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Timlin got
relief help from Okajima who gained credit for his 1st save.  Fausto
Carmona(0-1) was given the loss.  He gave up 11 hits and no walks in 6

Brad Lidge was strong in relief for Pittsburgh as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat
the Minnesota Twins by a score of 6 to 4.

Pittsburgh took the lead for good in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits.  Alex Rios got things going when he drew a walk.
After an out was recorded, Mark Derosa stepped up to the plate and he ripped
a one-base hit.  Rafael Betancourt then laid down a sacrifice bunt.  B.J.
Upton stepped in and he was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Dustin
Pedroia stepped into the box and doubled.  The Minnesota bats were silent in
the 9th.  

Betancourt(1-0) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. Lidge
recorded the save, his 1st.  Matt Herges(0-1) was the loser in relief.

hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Aaron Hill who deflated the mood of
the partisan fans when he clubbed a two-run home run.  For the game Minnesota
out-hit Pittsburgh 14 to 6.  

The win was credited to Johan Santana(1-0) who went 7 innings allowing 3 runs.
The losing pitcher was Orlando Hernandez(0-1).  He was hit hard and gave up 7

score of 3 to 2.

Pittsburgh took the lead for keeps in the top of the 7th inning plating one
baserunner using 2 hits.  Overall Pittsburgh out-hit Minnesota 8 to 3.  

The win went to Aaron Cook(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Cook
got relief help from Brad Lidge who gained credit for his 4th save.  Roy
Halladay(0-1) was the loser.  He gave up 8 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3
innings.
