WEB GEMS- Bot 2nd: Hanley Ramirez robbed Brandon Phillips of a base hit.

In a startling finish the Kansas City Royals staged a comeback then held on to
win over the Seattle Mariners by a score of 7 to 4 at Camden Yards.

Kansas City came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning as
they scored 5 runs on 6 base hits. The highlight belonged to Hanley Ramirez
who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he lofted a three-run
'big-fly'. For the game Kansas City out-hit Seattle 15 to 7.

The victory went to Ronald Belisario(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs.
Jonathan Broxton got the save, his 6th. Trevor Hoffman(1-1) was given the
loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 5 hits and 1
walk.

'The only way this one could have been better', said Belisario, 'was if we had
played it at home.'

Hanley Ramirez connected with a 'big fly' at Camden Yards as the Kansas City
Royals came back dramatically to top the Seattle Mariners by the score of 8
to 6.

Kansas City won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs

Castillo came next and he laced a one-base hit. Castillo took off for second
and slid in with a stolen base. Joe Mauer came up and he stroked a base-hit.
Ramirez was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. David Aardsma then let
one slip out of his hand for a wild pitch. Adrian Gonzalez stepped up to the
plate and he banged out a single. Ryan Zimmerman then lined a single.
Kansas City had 14 hits for the game and Seattle had 10.

The victory was credited to Ronald Belisario(2-0) who went 2 and 2/3 innings,

allowed 3 hits and no walks without retiring a batter.

'Brooks Crandall was estatic following the game, 'You love stealing one on the
road like this. We just kept plugging away until we pulled it out!'

Right fielder J.D. Drew smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Kansas City
Royals beat the Seattle Mariners by a score of 8 to 2.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Drew. He blasted a solo shot in the 2nd inning, banged out a
single in the 3rd inning, delivered a one-base hit in the 7th inning and
lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 8th inning. Kansas City banged out 10
hits on the night.

Ramon Troncoso(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Jon Lester(1-1) ended up with the loss. He pitched 5 and
1/3 innings giving up 6 hits and 2 walks.

'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Drew said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
it.'

Justin Verlander retired 11 batters on strikeouts and Albert Pujols had 4 hits
and 3 RBI at Kauffman Stadium as the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City
Royals by the count of 8 to 7.

The Kansas City fans didn't appreciate the big day Pujols had. He ripped a
base-hit in the 2nd inning, doubled scoring a run in the 3rd inning, clubbed
a solo home run in the 5th inning and lashed a single which scored a run in
the 7th inning. Kansas City had a chance to come back in the 9th but they
came up short.

The victory went to Verlander(2-3) who went 6 innings, allowing 6 runs.
Verlander was helped out by Trevor Hoffman who recorded his 3rd save. The
losing pitcher was Dan Haren(3-1). He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9 hits
and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Verlander was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little
odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a
running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just
strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'
