Jaime Garcia reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts and Dustin Pedroia homered as
the Arizona Diamondbacks bested the Seattle Mariners 4 to 2 at Camden
Yards.

Garcia(2-0) pitched a solid game. He was reached for 10 hits and 2 walks in 8
and 2/3 innings. Seattle tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

Garcia was helped out by Jose Valverde who recorded his 2nd save. The loss
was charged to Alfredo Aceves(0-1). Garcia didn't realize how many
strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had 10 he was obviously
surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent total, but I didn't
think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good, isn't it?'

Justin Verlander retired 11 batters on strikeouts as the Seattle Mariners
defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5 to 1 at Camden Yards.

Verlander(3-0) had a strong outing. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just
7 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 1.59 to 1.38. Seattle
had 10 hits for the night.

James Shields(0-3) was charged with the loss. Mark Childs was upset after the
game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?',
he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's
printed in the rule book.'
