WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Brandon Phillips robbed Jonathan Schoop of a base hit.

In a dramatic ending the Seattle Mariners staged a comeback and held on to win
over the Oakland A's by the count of 2 to 1.

Seattle scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 2 runs using 2 hits.
Carl Crawford led off the inning for Seattle when he delivered a single.
Crawford was safe on a stolen base. After an out was recorded, Albert Pujols
then cleared the fences for a two-run home run. The game was a scoreless
duel until the 6th inning.

Sergio Romo(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no
runs. Francisco Rodriguez earned his 4th save. Jake Arrieta(3-1) was the
losing pitcher. He gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.

Jack Mudd was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss.
He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse,
yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose.
Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us
tonight'

Second baseman Brandon Phillips lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2
RBI as the Seattle Mariners outscored the Oakland A's 4 to 2.

Oakland was unable to climb back into it after Seattle went ahead for good in
the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners on 1 hit. The key at-bat was by Phillips
who disappointed the partisan crowd when he popped a two-run clout over the
fence. Darren O'Day pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 1st
save.

The victory was credited to Felix Hernandez(4-2) who went 7 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 2 runs. Collin McHugh(1-2) was tagged with the loss. Although
losing the contest, he whiffed 8 batters in 5 and 1/3 innings.

'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Hernandez, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'
